Tangible Actions to Preserve Coastal Ecosystems with Khong Guan

Amid growing concerns over the threats facing coastal ecosystems, Radio Sonora 92 FM, together with Khong Guan Biscuit Factory Indonesia Ltd., organized the “Mangrove Adventure with Sonora” event on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at the Mangrove Ecotourism Area in Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK), North Jakarta. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to raising public awareness about the vital importance of mangrove conservation in safeguarding coastal environments and educating communities on the crucial role mangroves play along our shorelines. The event actively engaged families, children, and environmentally conscious communities in hands-on conservation efforts. It also featured fun, educational activities designed to make learning about mangroves both enjoyable and impactful.

Mangrove Planting with Khong Guan
The event offered a variety of engaging activities, including:

Mangrove Planting:
Participants planted mangrove seedlings in designated areas, fostering a deeper understanding of how mangroves contribute to coastal ecosystem resilience and help prevent erosion.

Environmental Education:
Through interactive educational sessions, participants learned about the multiple benefits of mangrove such as protecting coastlines, providing habitats for diverse species, and sequestering carbon. The content was delivered in accessible language suitable for all age groups.

Nature Eco Tour:
Led by experienced ecotourism guides, participants took a guided walk through the mangrove forest, where they could directly observe the rich biodiversity thriving within this unique ecosystem.

Photo and Documentation Session:
Participants also had the opportunity to take group photos at scenic spots throughout the Mangrove Park. These photos were encouraged to be shared on social media to amplify public awareness about mangrove conservation.

Goals and Aspirations of the Mangrove Ecotourism Event
The primary objective of this event was to inspire communities especially younger generations to become more engaged and proactive in environmental conservation. By involving families and children, Khong Guan aims to instill values of environmental stewardship from an early age.

This initiative holds particular relevance for Indonesia, which is home to one of the world’s largest mangrove forests. According to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) as of December 2021, Indonesia’s mangrove ecosystem spans approximately 3.63 million hectares.

As co-organizers and sponsors, Radio Sonora and Khong Guan are committed to being at the forefront of environmental education, promoting awareness through interactive and informative programs like this one. After all, protecting mangroves means safeguarding the future of our oceans, our land, and our own lives
